Cliff jumping in the Adriatic Sea!

Cliff jumping in the Adriatic Sea!

After spending most of yesterday on buses, we found ourselves surrounded by the transparant Adriatic Sea, rock-filled beaches, boats, steep cliffs, old and narrow marble streets freshly polished from constant foot traffic and beautiful buildings.

And we also discovered the perfect spot to jump from a cliff into the clear, cool, salty Adriatic Sea. I know just how salty the water tastes because it filled my nostrils as soon as I entered the water after jumping from the cliff about 10 or 12 feet above ... a small price to pay for an adrenaline rush on a hot and sunny July afternoon along the southern Croatian coast.

We spent the day in Dubrovnik, located right on the Adriatic Sea. It is a mountainous area, and the cliffs that boarder the coast make for some incredible geography and sights. I had no idea Croatia was such an idyllic place.

Dubrovnik, Croaria

The day began by walking about five minutes from our hostel to a small beach. One observation about the beaches here: There is no sand. Instead, the beach area is full of smooth rocks until you enter the refreshing clear water. Beach goers simply put their towels in the rocks to soak up the sun.

Cove where we went swimming today

Beach we visited ... notice the beach sans sand!

We spent about an hour here swimming. The beach was in a horse shoe-shaped cove and surrounded by tall cliff walls. The opening of the horse shoe was the sea. From above you could see several boulders in the water. Some people were kayaking, others were snorkeling. We decided just to swim. It was the perfect beach to swim and relax, as there were only about 100 people around.

Around noon we decided to walk about 10 minutes to the Old Town to find some lunch. Hundreds of passengers from a cruise ship had just arrived, so the narrow streets were busy as we navigated through the crowd.

Old Town around noon

We found a place called Taj Mahal for lunch. We tried to eat here last night but there was a long wait. Chris and I were both craving some good food after last night's bad dinner. This place was perfect and we enjoyed some Bosnian delicacies. Here is what I had for lunch ... beef stuffed with cheese.

This was my Bosnian lunch

Afterward, we did some souvenir shopping (Leslee Peeper ... I found the perfect gift for you ... but you'll have to wait two weeks). Once our lunch had settled, we started to look for the cliff jumping spot the hostel employee told us about last night.

We walked along the winding coastal path until we spotted another small beach with the ideal cliff jumping spot. First, we watched a man jump. Afterward, we did the same. Chris went first and I went afterward. It was about a 10 to 12 foot jump, and we did it three times. It was a blast.  In fact, I can still taste the salt that appears to have found a permanent home in my nostrils. (After the second jump, I plugged my nose before hitting the water.)

Chris went first!

This was jump two!

Jump three!

We found a small outdoor cafe at the end of a tiny street to have a Coke before returning to the hostel to shower. Afterward, we walked back to the Old Town for dinner. We went to a place overlooking the bay that served seafood and more traditional dishes. Chris had some delicious seafood and I ordered a turkey dish. It was a great meal. We did some souvenir shopping afterward, had some ice cream, picked up our laundry and then returned to the hostel for the night. This was the first time we have done laundry since we arrived, and I think we'll be able to get by without doing it again.

It is hard to believe that two weeks of our four-week journey have already passed. We are having a great time exploring everything we can, and I think the last two weeks will be as memorable as the first two.

We fly to Milan, Italy, Sunday morning and will make our way to Interlaken, Switzerland, via two trains. We hope to arrive in Interlaken between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m., depending on which train we can catch. We will be in Interlaken for four nights and three days.

Thanks again for reading and following us!
